Jack Smith Community Service Award

Presented annually by the Black River Audubon Society since 2022

Award Description:

The Jack Smith Community Service Award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to conservation, environmental education, and community engagement in support of Black River Audubon’s mission. Named in memory of Jack Smith—an inspiring advocate, dedicated volunteer, and passionate supporter of birds and nature— this award is often considered a lifetime achievement recognition. However, it may also honor those who, while still actively serving, have already made a long-standing and meaningful impact.

Nominees for the Jack Smith Community Service Award should meet several of the following criteria:

  • Volunteer Service: Significant volunteer contributions to Black River Audubon or closely aligned environmental or conservation causes within the region.

  • Community Impact: Demonstrated efforts that have positively influenced public awareness, environmental stewardship, or bird conservation in the community.

  • Leadership: Shown leadership in organizing, promoting, or sustaining programs, projects, or events that support BRAS’s goals.

  • Dedication: A sustained and selfless commitment to service over time, particularly work done without expectation of recognition.

  • Mentorship and Inspiration: Helped inspire others—especially youth or new members—to engage in conservation or environmental education.

Eligibility:

The award is open to BRAS members and the community at-large, but not current BRAS Board Members. Nominees may include volunteers, educators, public officials, community leaders, or anyone whose work aligns with the spirit and mission of Black River Audubon Society.

Selection Process:

Nominations are accepted annually and reviewed by the Board of Directors at the July Board Meeting. The award is presented at the Annual Dinner.
